He's Australia’s retired "great dissenter" Justice of the High Court, as well as a celebrated defender of human rights worldwide.

The Social Justice and Equity portfolio of the LSS were thrilled to announce the HONOURABLE MICHAEL KIRBY AC CMG as the keynote speaker at the public lecture to mark the conclusion of the 'Just Leadership Program' for 2016.

Kirby last presented at Monash in 2013 to a packed-out theatre, and students were blown away by his captivating presence and words of wisdom. He will provide fascinating insights into how we can better achieve justice and equality within our laws and in the wider society.

Now in its seventh year, the prestigious Just Leadership Program provides an opportunity for law students to enhance their understanding of topical social justice issues in the context of the law and public policy, by being exposed to an incredible collection of speakers who are renowned in their respective fields.

Topics include, among others: Asylum Seekers' Rights, LGBTIQ+ Rights & the Law, Indigenous Access to Justice, Environmental Justice, and new in 2016, Animal Law & Justice.

In 2016, participants have been lucky enough to gain access to incredible speakers from various legal professions, including but not limited to: Rob Hulls (former Attorney-General of Victoria), Judge Amanda Chambers (Current President of the Children's Court) and Julian Burnside AO QC (human rights advocate).

Participants also had the opportunity to work in small groups to produce a project in an area of social justice law. This year's participants have been hard at work completing many different projects including policy pieces, parliamentary inquiries, written blogs and video presentations.
