Civil Engineering students meet with representatives from industry.

ACES Industry night is the flagship event of Association of Civil Engineering Students. This event aims to create a platform for civil engineering students to be familiar with the current civil industry and networking with representatives from the industry.

The ACES industry night was delivered in two stages: company presentations and networking. In the first stage, each company representative gave a 5 minute presentation addressing the works that they do and introduced their graduate and vac work programs to students. The graduate talks specifically would have been useful to students in their final year as most companies were recruiting graduate engineers for next year.

In the networking stage, each company sets up a stall with a banner and a table. Students had the chance to speak to representatives from the company which they were interested in and acquired more information about the projects that they do, people they were looking for.

In this year’s industry night, 14 civil engineering companies which covered infrastructure, transport, geotechnical, water, and advisory were invited to the night. The companies were:

  • GHD
  • SMEC
  • Level Crossing Removal Authority (now part of MTIA)
  • Jacobs
  • ATC Williams
  • Beveridge Williams
  • Arcadis
  • John Holland
  • VicRoads
  • Taylors Development Strategists
  • Australian Water Association
  • Arup
  • Mott MacDonald
  • Advisian

Members thus could develop an understanding of the various roles and specialisations in the industry. Sandwich platters, rolls, and drinks were provided for the attendees and representatives. The event went well and attracted 120 attendees, with one student coming from outside Monash to talk to the representatives.
