The SAM Welcome Night Dinner was an initiative hosted by the Singapore Association of Monash to welcome new and old students back to Melbourne.
The SAM Semester One Welcome Night held by Singapore Association of Monash (SAM) was held on the 28th February in the Main Dining Hall.
The theme for the event is Chinese New Year which is a cultural celebration of the Lunar New Year. This is a festival that is celebrated worldwide, and usually falls from the first to 15th day of the lunar calendar, mostly in February.
The aim of this event was to allow our members to be able to celebrate the Lunar New Year away from home, while also welcoming new and existing members back to Monash University. The celebration of the Lunar New Year is an important traditional holiday in many countries. This event allowed students from other countries to celebrate the festival and be part of an event which they may otherwise be unable to partake in, as well as being able to socialise with people of different nationalities who share a similar cultural upbringing.
The event commenced at 6:30pm and concluded by 9:30pm. Attendees were served authentic Lunar New Year snacks on arrival. After registration was complete, we had a short presentation to welcome attendees back to Monash. Following that, attendees could partake in the “Yu Sheng”. Following this, attendees were served Fried Rice and were given time to consume their meal as well as socialise with each other.
